Telecommunications in India

India's telecommunications environment has developed by leaps and bounds in recent years.
Even if you go to a pretty great countryside with no TV or washing machine, you can still connect to the Internet.

We will guide you through the internet environment in India and how to use the internet in India.

1. use a service such as Rakuten Mobile, ahamo, Softbank, etc. where you can use your own smartphone overseas without modification.

Please check the activation procedure in India in advance before your departure from Japan.

2. buy a SIM in Japan in advance

It is available on Amazon.com and can be set up for SIM replacement in advance in Japan. Please choose a SIM that is compatible with India.
Of course, please make sure that your phone is SIM-free.

It is easy and convenient to bring an overseas SIM from Japan because it automatically connects when you turn on your phone upon arrival in India (inside the airport building, you may not be able to connect because communication is restricted, but once you leave the airport, you will be connected).

Communication speeds are fast and can be used with the same sensation as in Japan.

3. use Wi-Fi in hotels in India

If you do not use the Internet on a regular basis, you may only need the hotel's Wi-Fi.

However, those who need internet to facilitate their trip will need to prepare a separate SIM.

4. buy a SIM in India

SIMs are available for both Indian and foreign travelers, and SIMs for foreigners are sold at major airports in India.
On the other hand, stores in Indian cities do not cater to foreign travelers, and the long and time-consuming procedures make it impractical for tourists.

To establish a smooth internet environment, it is recommended to buy in the airport. You can purchase it immediately.

Purchase Procedure

  1. The airtel is located at Delhi Airport Terminal 3, near Exit 4 and 5, and sells tickets for Rs. 500 (as of November 2024, up to 1.5G per day, valid for 30 days), in cash only.
  2. If you do not have rupees, you can withdraw money at the ATM right next to it.
  3. The airtel staff will photocopy your passport photo page and visa, and a mug shot will also be taken on the spot.
After the staff visually confirms that the personal information (passport photo) and the purchaser (the customer in front of you) match, they will sell you the SIM.
  4. The staff will take care of you until activation.
