Telecommunications in India

SIMs are available for both Indian and foreign travelers, and SIMs for foreigners are sold at major airports in India.

On the other hand, stores in Indian cities are not recommended for tourists because they do not cater to foreign travelers and the procedures are lengthy and time-consuming.

Wifi can also be difficult to connect to, and depending on the social situation, the government may intentionally block communication.

To establish a smooth internet connection for your phone, it is recommended to buy a SIM in the airport. It can be purchased immediately.

SIM Card Purchase Procedure in Delhi Airport

  1. The sales counter (airtel) is located at Delhi Airport Terminal 3, near Exit 4 and 5, and costs Rs. 500 and is cash only.
  2. If you do not have rupees, you can withdraw money at the ATM right next to it.
  3. The airtel staff will take a copy of the passport photo page and a copy of the visa, and an additional photo will be taken on the spot. This proves that the personal information matches the purchaser before proceeding with the purchase.
  4. The Internet will be available 3-4 hours after purchase.

Note that Wi-Fi in India is more difficult to connect than you might imagine.

Surrounded by neighboring countries on the land, India's first priority is to prevent terrorism and ensure national security, and does not consider the convenience of foreigners staying temporarily in the country.

If you are concerned about communication, please consider purchasing an eSIM in advance in Japan.
